The Divers

Archival Photographic Print

Every crushed can in The Divers was found in street gutters and public bins, then collected and smashed by hand.

No two cans are alike. Each carries its own history — a trace of a place, a moment, a person who used it and discarded it.

But this is not a study of waste.

It is an archaeology of who we are.

Inside each crushed can, a human bone appears. These are The Divers — fragments of the human body emerging from discarded metal. Bone and can become one object; the human and the industrial, the living and the discarded.

The idea of DNA runs through the work as a reminder that beneath the surfaces we create, consume and throw away, we remain biological.

The cans become modern fossils.

The Divers are what is left inside them.

Residual Bodies

These works begin with images of people and are built through layers of discarded materials, packaging, printed fragments and visual debris from everyday life. I take things that are usually ignored, thrown away or consumed without thought and bring them into the body of the image.

The human figure becomes mixed with plastic, foil, paper, blister packs, advertising fragments and halftone textures. Faces and bodies are interrupted, covered and reconstructed. What looks disposable becomes part of the composition.

I am interested in the collision between the human body and the world it produces and consumes. These are digital interventions, but the starting point is physical: found materials, waste, photographs, print and texture. I use the computer as another layer of the collage, breaking the image apart and rebuilding it until the original photograph becomes something else.
